Ahmed Hayreddin Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Muğla in 1878/79 (AH 1296). On record 1906 to 1912, 7 annual entries.

Life

Ahmed Hayreddin Efendi was born in Muğla in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a director (müdür). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi). Ahmed Hayreddin knew four languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.

Work began in Jeddah (Cidde) in 1906/07, at about 27, paid from the start, on 700 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Ahmed Hayreddin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Jeddah. Next came Kayseri from 1907 to 1909, then a return to Jeddah from 1909 to 1911, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru). The last posts were in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) from 1911 to 1912. The farthest post, Al Hudaydah, lay about 2,900 km from Muğla, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

The salary went from 700 kuruş a month in 1906/07 to 1,800 in 1911, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Al Hudaydah, when 84 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1911/12.
