Life

Born in Isparta in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Nuri Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Nuri also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Denizli in 1903/04, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1907/08 places Mehmet Nuri in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in İskenderun.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in İskenderun, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 9,000 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
