Life

Born in Karadag in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Ali Safvet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Alay Mufettisi". Ali Safvet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Persian as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 19, in 1903/04, Ali Safvet began work in Tuzhurmato, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1905/06 to 1907/08 places Ali Safvet in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Baghdad (Bağdat). Baghdad, about 2,400 km from Karadag, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Baghdad, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
