Life

Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Ali Remzi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Ali Remzi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 18, in 1902/03, Ali Remzi began work in Beirut (Beyrut), with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1905/06 and 1906/07, place Ali Remzi in Izmir (İzmir) as Gise Memuru.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Gise Memuru in Izmir, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
