Life#
Hasan Fehmi Efendi was born in Tyre (Sur) in 1883/84 (AH 1301) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Nufus Memuru". Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan Fehmi also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Hasan Fehmi began work in Sirkeci in 1905/06, at about 21, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1905/06, places Hasan Fehmi in Sirkeci as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Istanbul from 1906 to 1910, with a rise to a post in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi) in 1909/10.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1905/06 to a peak of 600 in 1909/10, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 56 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1909/10.
