Life#
Mehmet Faik Efendi was born in Sivas in 1880/81 (AH 1298), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1896/97, Mehmet Faik began work in Merzifon, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Mehmet Faik in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1903/04. The last posts were in İskenderun from 1904 to 1906 and Antakya in 1906/07.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 400 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in İskenderun, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 23,400 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07. Mehmet Faik probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Sivaslı devlet adamları" by NESLİHAN EROL (2022) (the name and the birthplace agree).
