Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Sivas in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Rıza also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Sivas in 1897/98, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1899/1900, to 1906/07, every annual entry places Ali Rıza in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Sivas, the birthplace.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 300 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Sivas, when one in four paid officials earned less.
