Life#
Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Ordu in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ordu in 1892/93, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1898/99 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Şükrü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Sivas.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Sivas, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, eight years of salary come to 28,800 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
