Life#
Born in Ordu, Hasan Ali Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). The records give birth years from 1873 to 1887 (AH 1290 to 1304). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Ali also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Ordu in 1889/90 (AH 1307), paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Hasan Ali in Ordu, the birthplace, as Muvassil. Next came Pristina (Priştine) from 1891 to 1894, then Priboj (Priboy) from 1894 to 1900, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Istanbul from 1900 to 1904, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 800 in 1900/01, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
