Life#
Mustafa Sami Efendi was born in Ordu in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Sami also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 17, in 1892/93, Mustafa Sami began work in Ordu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Mustafa Sami in Samsun as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1895 to 1905 the annual entries place Mustafa Sami in Trabzon, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1902/03 as a central office official (Merkez Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 380 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Samsun, when 26 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years pay ended where it began, at 380 kuruş. After the last annual entry, for 1904/05, the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
