Life#
Born in Sana'a (Sana) in 1877/78 (AH 1294), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote Turkish and spoke French, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1890/91, the official began work in Yozgat, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Yozgat. The official then moved to Jeddah (Cidde), Haskovo (Hasköy), Heybeliada, Büyükada and Beyoğlu, five places in five years. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1900 to 1904, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The farthest post, Haskovo, lay about 3,450 km from Sana'a, and 24 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 800 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
