Life#
Mehmet Şükrü Efendi was born in Isparta in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1889/90, at about 46, paid from the start, on 125 kuruş a month. Few began so late; 11 of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 46 or older. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Şükrü as Muvassil in Babi seraskeri. Next came Istanbul from 1891 to 1901, with a rise to a post in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi) in 1895/96 and to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1896/97. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1901 to 1903.
Pay rose from 125 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 720 in 1901/02, as Seyyar Memur in Thessaloniki, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03. Mehmet Şükrü probably has an entry in "II. Abdülhamid döneminde Ispartalı memurlar (Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre 1879-1909)" by MUSTAFA KAYA (2014) (the name and the birthplace agree).
