Life#
Hüseyin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Hüseyin in Babi seraskeri as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin to Ankara in 1893/94, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1895 to 1906 every annual entry places Hüseyin in Bab-i vala.
Pay rose from 60 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 400 in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Ankara, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 180 kuruş. Over 16 years the salaries add up to 46,980 kuruş, 49 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
