Life#
Hafız İbrahim Tevfik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Tevfik also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Van in 1888/89, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places İbrahim Tevfik in Van as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1894/95. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Tevfik to Kurukavak from 1895 to 1900. The last posts were in Samatya from 1900 to 1906, first as an official of a telegraph or post office (Merkez Memuru), from 1901/02 in the Musevvit Kalemi.
The salary went from 190 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 500 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Van, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
