Life#
Mustafa Kamil Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1883/84, Mustafa Kamil began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Mustafa Kamil as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Keşan. Next came Devebagirtan in 1889/90, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1890 to 1892. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Kamil to Babi seraskeri and Istanbul from 1892 to 1895. From 1895 to 1906 the annual entries place Mustafa Kamil again in Babi seraskeri, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 640 in 1905/06, the peak, as Başmuhabere Memuru in Babi seraskeri, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
