Life#
Born in Çemişgezek in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Mehmet Ali Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Mehmet Ali had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1892/93, Mehmet Ali began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1894/95, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mehmet Ali in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Babi seraskeri.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 350 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Babi seraskeri, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 36,000 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
