Life#
Ahmet Nusret Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Nusret also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Mazgirt in 1899/1900, at about 19, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Ahmet Nusret in Neapoli (Nasliç) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Neapoli, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre çemişgezekli devlet memurları" by YETER ÖZDEMİR BIYIK (2024) probably refers to Ahmet Nusret, since the name and the birthplace agree.
