Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1886/87 (AH 1304), Mehmet Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army captain (yüzbaşı). Mehmet Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1902/03, Mehmet Nuri began work in Neapoli (Nasliç), with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Mehmet Nuri in Kozani (Kozana) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last posts were in Neapoli from 1906 to 1908.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Kozani, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over five years the salaries add up to 12,000 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
