Life#
Mehmet Cemal Efendi was born in Gusinje (Gusinye) in 1886/87 (AH 1304) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1900/01, Mehmet Cemal began work in Gusinje, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Mehmet Cemal as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Novi Pazar (Yenipazar). The last posts were in Skopje (Üsküp) from 1904 to 1908.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Novi Pazar, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 18,000 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
