Life#
Born in Çanakkale in 1886/87 (AH 1304), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a doctor (doktor). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote French as well as Turkish and spoke Arabic.
The official began work in Al Hudaydah (Hudeyde) in 1903/04, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1903/04, to 1906/07, every annual entry places the official in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Yemen. Yemen, about 3,250 km from Çanakkale, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 46 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to a peak of 600 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Yemen, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
