Life#
Musa Kâzım Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Musa Kâzım also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Musa Kâzım began work in Niksar in 1900/01, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Musa Kâzım in Aydın as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Chios (Sakız) from 1903 to 1905 and Manisa in 1905/06.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 300 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Chios, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 13,800 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre çemişgezekli devlet memurları" by YETER ÖZDEMİR BIYIK (2024) probably refers to Musa Kâzım, since the name and the birthplace agree.
