Life#
Born in İpsala in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Fehmi Efendi was the child of an imam. Ömer Fehmi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 19, in 1901/02, Ömer Fehmi began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Ömer Fehmi in Aydın as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Tripoli in 1905/06, as a postal official (Posta Memuru) and Seyyidulmansur in 1906/07. The lists give Aciga Cikarildi for 1904/05 instead of a title.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Tripoli, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
