Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1873/74 (AH 1290), İbrahim Ethem Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). İbrahim Ethem had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Izmir in 1891/92, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with İbrahim Ethem in the Ambar Kalemi in Izmir, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1899/1900. From 1900 to 1907 the annual entries place İbrahim Ethem in Aydın.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 300 in 1905/06, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aydın, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less.
