Life#
Hüseyin Rahmi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Rahmi began work in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Hüseyin Rahmi in Samsun as a postal official (Posta Memuru). The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Rahmi to Aydın, Salihli, Filiates (Filat) and Karayin, four places in eight years, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1892/93, then Kilan from 1896 to 1904. The last posts were in Navarin from 1904 to 1907.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as an official of a telegraph or post office (Merkez Memuru) in Navarin, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 127,920 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
