Life#
Born in Burgas (Burgaz) in 1851/52 (AH 1268), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. The official had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Karadeniz Ereğli in 1884/85, at about 33, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 33 or older. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bartın. Next came Gerede, Çerkeş and Trabzon from 1890 to 1894, then Samsun from 1894 to 1901. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) and Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1901 to 1904 and Bigadiç in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, as 3. Müdür in Bigadiç, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 16 years the salaries add up to 56,400 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
