Life#
Mustafa Remzi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Remzi also attended the telegraph school.
At about 15, in 1858/59, Mustafa Remzi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places Mustafa Remzi in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Remzi to Sofia (Sofya), Bosna and Celebipazari from 1873 to 1877, then Bandırma from 1877 to 1884. Next came Bursa and Karacabey (Mihaliç) from 1884 to 1892, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1889/90, then Karesi from 1892 to 1899, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Sivas from 1899 to 1906. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 1,000 in 1899/1900, as 2. Müdür in Sivas, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 36 years of salary come to 253,860 kuruş, 1.1 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
