Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264), Hüseyin Avni Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior judge (mevali). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Cezairi bahri sefid in 1869/70, at about 21, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1871/72 to 1896/97 places Hüseyin Avni in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1876/77 as Icmal Baskitabeti and from 1892/93 as Muhasebe Kalemi Baskitabeti.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 1,050 in 1894/95, the peak, as Muhasebe Kalemi Baskitabeti in Istanbul, when nine in ten paid officials earned less.
