Life#
İsmail İsmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Hariciye hademesi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail İsmet also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 15, in 1868/69, İsmail İsmet began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1869/70 to 1905/06 places İsmail İsmet in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as Cetvel Mukayyitligi, from 1876/77 as Icmal Baskitabeti, from 1892/93 as Tetkik Baskitabeti and from 1905/06 as Muvazene Baskitabeti. A career like this is rare; 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
