Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a soldier (asker). İsmail Hakkı had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 15, in 1867/68, İsmail Hakkı began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1869/70 to 1898/99 places İsmail Hakkı in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace. Only 13 of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title in one place throughout.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1891/92, the peak, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 31 years the salaries add up to 172,920 kuruş, 88 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1898/99; the list of 1899/1900 (AH 1317) gives the status word Vefat (death).
