Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Hasan Faik Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a doctor (doktor). Hasan Faik had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 13, in 1864/65, Hasan Faik began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Hasan Faik in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1879/80. The last post was in Sivas in 1880/81, with a rise to Ticaret Mahkemesi Baskitabeti.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 500 in 1874/75, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1880/81.
