Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İbrahim Hayrettin Efendi was the child of a telegraph inspector (telgraf müfettişi). At about 12, in 1893/94, İbrahim Hayrettin began work in Taif, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with İbrahim Hayrettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Izmir (İzmir), where the entries run to 1904/05. The last posts were in Mecca (Mekke) from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). Mecca, about 2,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 800 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Mecca, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
