Life

Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Hasan Fethi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Hasan Fethi was taught by a private teacher. In all Hasan Fethi knew four languages, Bulgarian, French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.

At about 43, in 1901/02, Hasan Fethi began work in Izmir, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 23 started at 43 or older. The first annual entry, for 1901/02, places Hasan Fethi in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as Kartpostal Memuru. The last post was in Izmir, the birthplace, in 1902/03, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).

Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as Seyyar Memur in Izmir, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
