Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Yasil Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Yasil also wrote Arabic and French and spoke Turkish.
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1876/77, at about 15, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Yasil in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) as a sergeant (Çavuş). Yasil then moved to Gaziantep (Antep) and Mersin from 1879 to 1882, then Tarsus from 1882 to 1894, with a rise to chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Yasil back to Mersin from 1894 to 1896. The last posts were in Damascus (Şam) from 1897 to 1901.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 720 in 1899/1900, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Damascus, when four in five paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
