Life#
Born in Amed in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a senior army captain (kolağası). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti) in 1895/96, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Hüseyin Hüsnü in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Thessaloniki (Selanik).
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 460 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when half the paid officials earned less.
