Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1871/72 (AH 1288), İsmail Zühtü Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İsmail Zühtü began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with İsmail Zühtü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ordu. İsmail Zühtü then moved to Sjenica (Seniçe), Thessaloniki (Selanik), Karabulak, Chania (Hanya) and Drama, five places in six years. The last posts were in Thessaloniki again from 1899 to 1907.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 525 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Thessaloniki, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
