Life#
Born in Stara Zagora (Eski Zağra) in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Mustafa Ziver Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Work began in Zagra-i Atik in 1877/78, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1878/79, with Mustafa Ziver as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Beykoz, where the entries run to 1882/83. Next came four places in seven years, then Zliten from 1890 to 1897. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Ziver to six places in 13 years, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1908/09, then back to Konya from 1910 to 1911, with a rise to chief director (Başmüdür). The last post was in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1911/12. In all, 13 places on three continents, a number reached by only 38 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Taif, about 2,700 km from Stara Zagora, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 2,500 in 1910/11, as Başmüdür in Konya, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1911/12.
