Life#
Hafız Mustafa Şefik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa Şefik also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mustafa Şefik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shumen (Şumnu), where the entries run to 1871/72. Mustafa Şefik then moved to Beykoz from 1872 to 1887, then Sirkeci from 1887 to 1895. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Şefik back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1895 to 1900, with a rise to Kontrol Kalemi Basmemuru in 1899/1900. The last post was in Galata in 1900/01.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 1,000 in 1900/01, the peak, as Kontrol Kalemi Basmemuru in Galata, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less.
