Life#
Hafız Mustafa Şefik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa Şefik also attended the telegraph school and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1867/68, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Mustafa Şefik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Shumen (Şumnu). Next came Üsküdar in 1871/72, then Beyoğlu from 1872 to 1887. From 1887 to 1894 the annual entries place Mustafa Şefik in Sirkeci.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 800 in 1880/81, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Beyoğlu, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 199,380 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
