Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1852/53 (AH 1269) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüsnü Efendi was the child of an official of the civil administration (mülkiye memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüsnü began work in Thessaloniki in 1867/68, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Hüsnü as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Serres (Siroz). Hüsnü then moved back to Thessaloniki, the birthplace, from 1869 to 1878, then Berat in 1878. Next came a return to Thessaloniki from 1878 to 1884, then a return to Serres from 1884 to 1901, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The annual lists then follow Hüsnü to Preveza (Preveze), Darıca and Bilecik from 1901 to 1904. The last posts were in Bitola (Manastır) from 1904 to 1907. Entries spanning 40 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 1,080 in 1903/04, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bilecik, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. In all, 40 years of salary come to 347,400 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
