Life#
Mehmet Akif Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Babadag in 1869/70, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1873/74, with Mehmet Akif as an official (Memur) in Thessaloniki, the birthplace. Next came Isaccea (İsakça), Vilko, Varna, Van and Bitlis, five places in nine years, then Erzurum from 1882 to 1892. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Akif to Hamidiye from 1892 to 1900, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Havasor in 1900/01, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 700 in 1900/01, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Havasor, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 166,500 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
