Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1849/50 (AH 1266), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Nalbant". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Thessaloniki in 1864/65, at about 15, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places Hasan Tahsin in Edessa (Vodina) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Hasan Tahsin to Volos in 1867/68 and Bitola in 1868/69. From 1869 to 1878 the annual entries place Hasan Tahsin in Ohrid (Ohri), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to a peak of 800 in 1869/70, as 2. Müdür in Ohrid, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1878.
