Life#
Hamdi Efendi was born in Kars in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Istanbul in 1868/69, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Hamdi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kars, the birthplace. Hamdi then moved to Erzurum from 1872 to 1876, then Van from 1876 to 1881. The annual lists then follow Hamdi to four places in 16 years, then Başkale from 1897 to 1908. The last posts were in Van in 1908/09, as an assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini) and Elazığ in 1909/10. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 42 years or more. Nine places in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 1,200 in 1908/09, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Van, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10. Hamdi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Karslı memurlar (1879-1909)" by RÜVEYDE ÇİFÇİ (2015) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
