Life#
Born in Van in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mustafa Enver Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a policeman (polis). Mustafa Enver had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1894/95, Mustafa Enver began work in Malazgird, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Mustafa Enver as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Malazgirt. The last posts were in Başkale from 1904 to 1907.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Malazgirt, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 14,400 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
