Life#
Born in Kilis in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Ahmet Hami Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a court official (mahkeme memuru). Ahmet Hami had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), wrote Arabic as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1903/04, at about 22, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1903/04, with Ahmet Hami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aleppo. The lists have no entry for 1904 to 1906. The last posts were in Gaziantep in 1906/07 and Aleppo again from 1907 to 1909.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04 to 300 in 1907/08, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less.
