Life#
Born in Van in 1880/81 (AH 1298) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of a court official (mahkeme memuru). The official had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 17, in 1898/99, the official began work in Van, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1907/08 places the official in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Van, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Van, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 12,000 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
