Life#
Born in Adilcevaz in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Kamil Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Mehmet Kamil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 21, in 1896/97, Mehmet Kamil began work in Van, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 262 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Kamil in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Van.
Pay rose from 262 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 380 in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Van, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 20,280 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
