Life#
Osman Kadri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Osman Kadri began work in Adapazarı in 1882/83, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Osman Kadri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mitrovica (Mitroviça), where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Skopje (Üsküp), Kütahya, Burdur and Manisa, four places in ten years. The last post was in Söğüt in 1902/03, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 540 in 1902/03, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Söğüt, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
