Life#
Ali Rıza Efendi was born in Debrei bala in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Rıza began work in Gjilan (Gilan) in 1893/94, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1897/98, with Ali Rıza as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Drama. Next came Eleftheroupoli in 1898/99. The last posts were in Kavala from 1899 to 1906.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1897/98, as Posta Memuru in Drama, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 150 kuruş. In all, nine years of salary come to 16,800 kuruş, 31 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
