Life#
Recep Efendi was born in Ankara in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Recep began work in Kavala in 1899/1900, at about 29, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Recep as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Kavala, where the entries run to 1901/02. The last posts were in Avrathisar and Krusova from 1902 to 1906 and Serres (Siroz) in 1906/07.
