Life#
Hasan Fahri Efendi was born in Ankara in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took 12 years, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul; Hasan Fahri also attended the telegraph school, wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 21, in 1894/95, Hasan Fahri began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Hasan Fahri as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beyoğlu. The last posts were in Sirkeci from 1896 to 1900 and Izmir (İzmir) in 1900/01.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 600 in 1900/01, as Mandapost Memuru in Izmir, when 67 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
